An “energy vampire” is an appliance that keeps using energy even when it is switched off but still plugged into your home's electrical system.
Believe it or not, such appliances account for as much as a quarter of the energy used in a flat or house, which significantly affects the bill you pay at the end of the month.
In general, all these devices should be unplugged: TVs, cable boxes, game consoles, air conditioners, laptops… But the water heater is the champion among the “vampires”.
Leaving the hot water running for just one minute while you soap up costs you more per year than your washing machine, tumble dryer, dishwasher, hair dryer and iron combined.
Take as an example an 18 kW instantaneous water heater, which, unlike a classic water heater, has no tank and uses electricity only when you turn it on, i.e. when hot water is running.
If soaping up takes about a minute (and for many people it takes longer), a family of four who shower once a day and turn off the water during that time will save 4 × 0.3 kWh that day, i.e. 1.2 kWh per day.
That is about 36 kWh per month and as much as 438 kWh per year. With classic water heaters the savings are even greater.
If you have a classic water heater (more than 90% of users in Serbia do), you can add at least another 30% to this calculation, which comes to an incredible 850 kWh or so per year.
